I everybody. Just a new guy here.
I'm looking at a 1987 655 that is for sale locally. The mower deck seems mighty small for the tractor. It looks like a 48". My 400 has a 60" deck. Can a larger deck be added? Are the decks hard to find though or is it easier to put a finishing mower behind it.
This tractor has been "restored". It has been painted and looks great. The diesel was rebuilt but I don't know why. It has 1100 hours on it.
Asking $5000 for it but I'm wondering about the rebuild.

The most cost effective option in my opinion would be to add a RFM. A larger MMM will be very costly unless you can luck out and find one at a salvidge yard or somewhere else. Not very likely. I would be asking the question as to why was the engine rebuilt?????? Could be that the hour meter was replaced but I would asking for documentation and reciepts at that point. $5000 seem kinda high to me. Is this a 4WD or 2WD? ....

Without seeing the tractor it is hard to make judgement calls. I don't think it should have needed a rebuild at 1100 hrs. if it was taken care of, likewise with the need for paint. The deck size is also small. Buying a larger MM deck will be difficult since they most always go with the tractor. It would be easier to get a rear mower. Then you need to consider ballast for the front. A 655 doesn't have allot of power either. What other uses do you have in mind. You can get a newer used JD or Cadet lawn mower with water cooled gasoline with 60" deck for about that price or a few dollars more that is real clean. For my kind of uses with loader, etc. I would rather have an 855 or 955. ....

Thanks for the replies. I'm a little slow at looking back.
I'm still looking and I might offer about $3500 to see what they say. ....
